Going once...twice...GONE! From March 13 - 30, in aid of the charity
Wings for Life, David Coulthard's original Formula 1 car will be up for
auction on eBay along with a series of other one-of-a-kind sports
memorabilia, including the helmet of iconic snowboarder Shaun White and
signed deck of pro skateboarder and MTV star Ryan Sheckler
TORONTO, March 12 /CNW/ - Admittedly, its interior space is modest, its
gas consumption hair-raising and its chassis, well, sporty. But this used car,
up for auction from March 13 on eBay, will probably cater to some juicy bids,
having been David Coulthard's racing car at the July 8, 2007 Silverstone
Formula 1 Grand Prix in England.
Who's got the keys to my F1?
The Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car with its special bodywork - 21,000 tiny
photos showing those who supported 'Wings for Life' through the 'Faces for
Charity' campaign - is the highlight of a never-before-held benefit auction
where athletes from various disciplines have donated personal memorabilia in
aid of 'Wings for Life.' All proceeds from the auction will finance research
projects for finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
A story behind every item
The research initiative can be supported with more than bids for
Coulthard's car. More than 40 absolutely unique exhibits from the world of
sports will be offered for sale between March 13 and 30, 2008.
"When we started to ask for a few unusual items we soon came to realize
that numerous athletes were more than willing to give us some of their
personal memorabilia and trophies," says Wings for Life founder, Heinz
Kinigadner. "We are thrilled that all revenues from the auction will be used
to make further progress in the field of spinal cord research."
In addition to Coulthard's car, other items included on the eBay online
marketplace for a starting bid of one Euro include:
- An autographed skateboard from Ryan Sheckler
- Helmets from Shaun White, Dani Pedrosa, Nicky Hayden, and Thomas
- Cyril Despres' victory motorcycle from the Dakar Rally 2007
- A flight with Red Bull Air Race champion Mike Mangold (including
journey and hotel costs and a VIP tour behind the scenes of a
Red Bull Air Race)
- Both a signed kite and board from Robby Naish
- An autographed jump suit from Felix Baumgartner
- A friendly match with the Red Bull Salzburg kickers
All proceeds to go to Wings for Life
Riding the waves like a pro with the board of a legend under your feet,
being faster on your bike with the helmet of a six-fold Ironman Hawaii winner
on your head or start carving like a god just because you're riding the skis
of an extreme skier - however, even those who treat these unique items with
kid gloves and just put them in a show case can be sure to have contributed to
helping more than 2.7 million people. This is the worldwide number of those
who are bound to a wheelchair after having suffered a spinal cord injury.
Every single euro from the Wings for Life Charity Auction will be invested in
research activities and contribute to further progress being made. The minimum
bid for each article is one Euro. EBay will be forgoing all levies on fees,
which means that all proceeds of each bid will be donated to 'Wings for Life.'
About Wings for Life
The Wings for Life private foundation pursues one great goal: making sure
that paraplegia no longer is a question of fate. Since 2004, the foundation
supports international top scientists who are working on promising research
projects which aim at finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. Being a
non-profit organisation, the foundation depends on private donations, 100
percent of which are directly invested in research activities. Donations by
Canadian residents are not eligible for charitable tax deduction purposes,
however all proceeds will go to spinal cord injury research.
