CUPE solidarity strengthens locked out UNITE HERE workers

TORONTO, Oct. 13 /CNW Telbec/ - Twenty locked out members of UNITE HERE
employees of Holiday Inn on King in Toronto, received a major boost from CUPE
this week when National Officers Paul Moist, president and Claude Généreux,
secretary treasurer, announced that Canada's largest union is pulling its
convention reservations from the hotel because of the job action.
The workers, members of UNITE HERE Local 75, are food service workers
locked out since September 28th when management shut down the Food and
Beverage Department.
"CUPE members cannot rest under the roof of an employer who locks out
workers," said Paul Moist, CUPE national president.
Workers, on the street since their employer refused to continue
bargaining with them, were joined on the picket line by Moist and Généreux.
Claude Généreux, CUPE national secretary-treasurer, reinforced the fact
that CUPE will not spend union members' money anywhere that treats its own
workers so unfairly.
"We tried to encourage management to move to a settlement," said
Généreux. "Since that did not happen and workers are still on the street, we
had no choice but to cancel the 97 rooms we had booked."
