CSA Group strengthens commitment to its sustainable practices by achieving carbon neutrality for North American operations

TORONTO, June 13 /CNW/ - CSA Group, consisting of the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA), CSA International and OnSpeX, today announces that is has
achieved carbon neutrality for its North American operations.
"CSA Group is dedicated to helping the environmental health of our planet
and setting an example for others by operating as a "green", socially
responsible organization," says Robert M. Griffin, President and CEO, CSA
Group. "We take environmental challenges very seriously and are continuously
improving on our own sustainable best practices. Through these best practices,
the development of environmental standards, and energy efficiency testing and
certification, it is CSA Group's goal to maintain a strong, ongoing commitment
to meeting climate change challenges."
In March 2008, CSA Group completed a greenhouse gas inventory of its
North American operations by following the requirements of ISO standard
14064-1 Greenhouse gases -- Part 1: Specification with guidance at the
organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas
emissions and removals. CSA Group calculated that its North American
Operations generated 8,720 metric tonnes of CO(2) emissions for fiscal year
2006-07 from four categories of activities, including: GHG emissions from
employee air travel; buildings; its vehicle fleet; and emissions from
inspectors car travel. The inventory was independently verified and audited by
the accounting firm GDTS. A Corporate GHG Report was produced and is posted on
CSA's GHG CleanStart(TM) Registry as the first entry at
http://www.ghgregistries.ca/cleanstart/index_e.cfm
CSA Group made a commitment to take steps to improve its carbon footprint
and displace emissions from electricity generation. In the interest of using
renewable sources of energy, it has purchased roof-top solar energy panels for
its Toronto headquarters. A 10KW system will be installed in the summer of
2008 at the 250,000 sq ft. facility. CSA Group will be able to monitor the
impact of the installation through a web-based monitoring system which will
measure and display environmental value (displaced CO(2) emissions, displaced
particulate emissions, equivalent cars off the road, equivalent acres of trees
planted and equivalent number of homes powered for one year). The system will
be connected to the electricity grid through the Ontario Renewable Energy
Standard Offer Program.
CSA Group will take additional measures over time to further improve its
carbon footprint and acquired credits to offset unavoidable emissions that
occurred in 2006-07. It purchased 5,521 tonnes from Canadian-based projects to
account for Canadian operations, and 3,199 tonnes from a U.S.-based project to
account for CSA Group's U.S. GHG emissions. Emission reductions stemming from
these projects were verified by independent third parties. The projects are
also registered on CSA's GHG CleanProjects(TM) Registry.
CSA Group's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint goes well beyond
North America. Through its Climate Change Ottawa office, it will continue to
coordinate a GHG inventory of CSA Group for the fiscal year 2007-08 reflecting
its entire operations worldwide.
As further evidence of its commitment to the environment, CSA Group
strives to hold carbon neutral events such as the CSA Annual Conference and it
encourages recycling across the organization with its Irvine office receiving
the State of California WRAP award in 2007 for its notable recycling program.
CSA Group will continue to monitor its environmental footprint and will
continue efforts to greatly improve recycling, reduce energy consumption and
GHG emissions at all of its offices in order to help improve the global
community in which it operates.
