TORONTO, Dec. 11 /CNW/ - With the busy holiday shopping season upon us
and the Canadian and U.S. dollar near parity, many North Americans are
shopping online and crisscrossing the Canada/U.S. border in search of the best
value and selection for their money. CSA International, a leading
certification and testing organization, wants to remind shoppers to take a few
moments to look at the certification marks on products before purchase to
ensure they are acceptable in their country of residence.
In order for gas, electric, plumbing and many other appliances and/or
products to be accepted for use by authorities in Canada, they must be tested
and certified by an accredited laboratory. CSA International certifies
products for use in both Canada and the U.S. or it may certify a product
against standards for only one country or the other. Products certified only
for one country might not be accepted for use by regulators or insurance
companies outside the country of purchase.
CSA International is accredited in the Unites States by the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Nationally Recognized Testing
Laboratory (NRTL). OSHA accredited laboratories conduct their tests against
the same sets of U.S. standards and codes, regardless of who authors or
publishes them. In Canada, CSA International is an Accredited Certification
Organization (ACO) by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
Certification marks appear on product packaging and on, or adhered to,
the product itself depending on the individual requirements of each applicable
standard. The CSA International certification mark indicates that a product
has been tested to a Canadian or U.S. standard and meets the requirements of
an applicable CSA standard or another recognized document used as a basis for
certification. Only when a product has been certified to an applicable
standard is it entitled to bear the appropriate CSA International
CSA International certified products for Canada only
For Canada, a CSA mark on its own without indicators means that the
product is certified primarily for the Canadian market to the applicable
Canadian standards. If a product has features from more than one area, (e.g.
electrical equipment with fuel burning features), the mark indicates
compliance to all applicable standards. For gas products, the CSA
certification flame mark indicates the product is certified to applicable
Canadian standards for appliances using gas or other petroleum fuel.
CSA International certified products for the United States of America
A CSA International certification mark with the indicator "US" or "NRTL"
means that the product is certified for the U.S. market to the applicable U.S.
standards. For gas products in the U.S., the CSA certification star indicates
the product is certified to applicable American standards for appliances using
gas or other petroleum fuel.
CSA International certified products for both Canada and the United
States of America
For both Canada and the U.S., a CSA mark with the indicators "C" and "US"
or "NRTL/C" means that the product is certified for both the U.S. and Canadian
markets to the applicable American and Canadian standards. If a product has
features from more than one area, (e.g. electrical equipment with fuel burning
features), the mark indicates compliance to all applicable standards.
In addition to certification marks, cross border shoppers should also ask
retailers about warranties and repairs for products purchased for use in
another country. In some cases warranties will not be honoured outside of the
country of purchase.
