CPAWS Wildlands League Welcomes New Ministers and Continued Focus on Environment

TORONTO, Oct. 31 /CNW/ - Yesterday Premier Dalton McGuinty and his
cabinet were sworn in with a continued focus on being an 'activist' government
on behalf of all Ontarians. "Ontarians want a healthy environment and we look
forward to working with the government to build on the tremendous success it
had with new protected areas legislation, source water protection and of
course, with new nation-leading Endangered Species Act," stated Janet Sumner
of CPAWS Wildlands League.
"We welcome Minister Cansfield - Member of Provincial Parliament for
Etobicoke Centre to her new portfolio as the Minister of Natural Resources. We
know that when Minister Cansfield held the energy portfolio she was
instrumental in creating a culture of conservation," says Ms. Sumner,
Executive Director for the group. "We look forward to working with her to
implement the province's green agenda. We hope that implementing the new
Endangered Species Act and achieving a long-term plan that protects the Boreal
Forest in Ontario's Far North will be front and centre," Ms. Sumner adds.
CPAWS Wildlands League also welcomes Minister John Gerretson - Member of
Provincial Parliment for Kingston and the Islands - to his new portfolio as
Minister of Environment. "It is vital that Ontario aggressively reduces
emissions as part of its comprehensive climate change program. We look forward
to working with Minister Gerretson to ensure that Boreal Forests and peatlands
- our global warming shield - are also protected in response to climate
change," Ms. Sumner says.
