CPA seeks agreement on new police officers during ministers' meeting

    OTTAWA, Nov. 13 /CNW Telbec/ - On November 14, 15 and 16, 2007, Federal,
Provincial and Territorial Justice and Public Safety Ministers will be meeting
in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canadian Police Association (CPA) is looking
forward to seeing a cost shared agreement with provincial governments to the
Federal Governments commitment of over 2500 new front-line police officers in
Canadian communities.
During the 2006 Election, Prime Minister Harper campaigned on putting at
least 2,500 more police officers on the beat in our cities and communities. As
recently as the October 2007 Speech from the Throne, the Federal Government
reaffirmed its commitment to provide resources to recruit 2,500 more police
officers.
"The Federal Government has recognized provincial and municipal police
forces are severely underfunded and overstretched. The CPA is anxiously
waiting the results of negotiations between the various governments and expect
that an agreement will be reached at the Winnipeg Federal, Provincial and
Territorial Justice and Public Safety Ministers' Meeting ", said Tony
Cannavino, President of the CPA. "Governments have had over a year and a half
to negotiate and front-line officers are looking forward to seeing some
results", he added.

The CPA is the national voice for approximately 57,000 police personnel
serving across Canada. Through our 170 member associations, CPA membership
includes police personnel serving in police services from Canada's smallest
towns and villages as well as those working in our largest municipal cities,
provincial police services, members of the RCMP, railway police, and First
Nations police associations.
