Cornwall youth to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Micheal Jensen of Cornwall will receive a Fire
Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at the
Fire Safety Awards ceremony on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual ceremony
recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in
Ontario.
In the late morning of October 6, 2008, then 13-year-old Micheal got off
the school bus at his grandmother's home. When he entered the dwelling,
Micheal could smell smoke and hear the smoke alarm activating. He called for
his grandmother, but there was no reply. He went to the kitchen and found his
grandmother lying on the floor and a burning pot on the stove. After turning
off the stove and safely extinguishing the pot, Micheal found he could not
successfully help his grandmother off the floor. He called 9-1-1, then
comforted his grandmother by placing a pillow under her head and opened the
windows to vent the smoke from the home.
"Often when youth are faced with a crisis situation where family members
are involved, panic can overcome safe practices," said Ontario Fire Marshal
Pat Burke. "Micheal's actions demonstrated that he remained calm and did what
was required to rescue and provide care for his grandmother. Micheal is a very
brave young man for his actions in this situation."

Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and
teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have
learned. Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
