Cornwall Resident Charged for Possession of Contraband Tobacco

SOUTH GLENGARRY, ON, Jan. 29 /CNW/ - Danielle Belanger, a 41 year old
female resident from Cornwall, Ontario was charged for possession of a tobacco
product not properly stamped under authority of the Excise Act 2001, breaching
conditions from an undertaking and driving while disqualified after officers
from the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call that a motor vehicle
was in the ditch on Highway 401 in South Glengarry, Ontario.
On January 28th, 2009, an officer from the OPP responded to the call that
a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina was in the ditch on Highway 401 eastbound in South
Glengarry, Ontario. At the time there was a winter storm in the area and
driving conditions were poor. The officer arrived at the scene and observed
the vehicle was transporting cardboard boxes of contraband cigarettes. A tow
truck driver who was at the scene advised the officer that the driver was
sitting in another vehicle. The officer questioned Danielle Belanger who
advised that she had been driving the vehicle and that she lost control due to
the weather conditions. Officers from the Cornwall RCMP Detachment were
contacted to assist.
RCMP officers attended the scene, arrested Danielle Belanger and seized
995 resealable bags of contraband cigarettes as well as the vehicle. She was
held in custody to appear for a bail hearing at the Cornwall court on January
29th, 2009.
"Criminal organizations do not consider public safety when they arrange
for people to drive in poor weather conditions to transport contraband
cigarettes on our roadways," said Sgt. Michael Harvey from the RCMP. "Their
ultimate goal is to make profits on this and other criminal activities no
matter what negative impact this has on our citizens."
