Consultation on Clean Vehicle Regulations an Opportunity to Inspire Innovation:

Cars and trucks to become more fuel efficient and technologically advanced

TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2011 /CNW/ - Pollution Probe commends the federal government for initiating stakeholder consultations on the development of regulations to limit greenhouse gas emissions from light-duty vehicles in Canada for model years 2017 and beyond. Emissions from vehicles account for roughly one-quarter of Canada's total greenhouse gas emissions inventory.

"Federal regulations are proven effective in advancing vehicle technologies to market that save motorists money on fuel and benefit the environment," says Bob Oliver, Chief Executive Officer of Pollution Probe. "Solid regulations will mobilize innovative designs in the auto sector and play to the strengths of Canada's world-class manufacturers of automotive products."

The U.S. rules on greenhouse gas emissions from light-duty vehicles, which include passenger cars, SUVs, minivans and pickups, provide Canada with a reference level on stringency, requiring annual reductions of 5 per cent from 2017 to 2025 for most vehicle classifications. "Pollution Probe looks forward to working with industry and experts throughout the consultation period to develop rules that optimize the benefits for Canada," says Bob Oliver.
