Conservatives repeat questionable pledge to rip almost $3 Billion from public health care

TORONTO, Sept. 8 /CNW/ - Today Conservative Leader John Tory repeated the
Conservative pledge to rip almost $3 Billion out of public health care to pay
for tax giveaways.
"Conservatives only know how to do one thing in health care, and that's
cut," said Liberal Deputy Premier George Smitherman. "All of the progress
we've made to reduce wait times and boost the number of doctors and nurses is
at risk."
Cutting health care funding has a rich Conservative history in Ontario.
Mike Harris promised not to close a single hospital. Then put 28 on the
chopping block.
Now John Tory is threatening to repeat the damage caused by Conservatives
with a pledge to rip out almost $3 Billion from health care, plus another $1.5
Billion in so-called "efficiencies".
"So far the only efficiency John Tory has identified to cut is back
x-rays. It shows you that Conservatives never change. The first thing they
think to cut is public health care," said Smitherman.
The Conservative legacy of cuts include:

      - Putting 28 hospitals on the chopping block
      - Firing thousands of nurses after comparing them to the hula hoop
      - Closing almost two dozen Emergency Rooms
      - Cutting seniors off of home care
      - Raising rates for long-term care residents by 15% - and sneakily
doing it over the Canada Day long weekend hoping no-one would notice

"Just when we're recovering from the Conservative cuts to health care,
John Tory wants to start cutting again. What kind of questionable judgment is
that?" Smitherman said.
