Collected Works/Random House web events with Peter Carey and Julian Barnes to be a Canadian first

OTTAWA, March 6 /CNW/ - This spring, Collected Works Bookstore and Random
House of Canada are launching an innovative series of events that will use
Internet-based technology to bring together Ottawa book lovers and two of the
world's most celebrated authors.
Two-time Booker Prize-winner Peter Carey (Oscar and Lucinda, True History
of the Kelly Gang) and British literary luminary Julian Barnes (Flaubert's
Parrot, History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, Arthur & George) will appear
at Collected Works via webcam from New York City (Carey) and London (Barnes).
Their readings will be projected on a big screen, and a webcam and microphone
in the store will enable them to see, hear, and take questions from the
in-store audience.
"The webcam events aren't a replacement for an author tour," says Craig
Poile, co-owner of Collected Works. "We're simply adding to the ways we
connect authors to their fans and potential fans. This is a chance to hear
writers that may never visit Ottawa in body, and we're thrilled, a bit giddy
even, that two of the very best have chosen to take part."
"I think this is a wonderful idea," says Anne Collins, Publisher, Random
House Canada, "and who better to inaugurate the series than Peter Carey and
Julian Barnes, both of whom are not only among our most gifted novelists, but
among our best readers: the chance to hear either of them, in the flesh or by
way of webcam, shouldn't be missed. And I hope people aren't shy about asking
questions!"
Peter Carey will read from his new novel, His Illegal Self, on Thursday,
March 27 at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m., Julian Barnes will read
from his highly anticipated non-fiction work, Nothing to Be Frightened Of.
After the reading, participants who have purchased a copy of the author's
new book at Collected Works will be able to request a personalized inscription
from the author on a customized bookplate, which will be shipped to Collected
Works for pickup.
There is no admission charge. Seating is limited, but speakers and
monitors will be placed around the store so that everyone can see and hear the
readers.
