CN Tower lights up in honour of organ and tissue donation

Trillium Gift of Life Network celebrates one-month countdown to
National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week

TORONTO, March 20 /CNW/ - Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) is
celebrating the one-month countdown to National Organ and Tissue Donation
Awareness Week (NOTDAW) April 20 - 27, today, with the help of the CN Tower.
Tonight, the CN Tower will be lit green, the colour symbolizing organ and
tissue donation.
"NOTDAW is an incredibly special week for us. We have many events going
on throughout the province to celebrate and honour organ and tissue donors in
Ontario," said Frank Markel, President and CEO of TGLN. "When you see the CN
Tower lit up green tonight please think about the importance organ and tissue
donation. You have the power to save lives."
On April 21, 1994, two-year-old, Stuart Herriott succumbed to head
injuries after an accident and his parents consented to organ donation. His
heart, liver and both kidneys were transplanted. Although, Colleen, 12, and
Amanda, 10 never knew their brother Stuart, he is still their hero.
"During National Organ and Tissue Donation Week I look back on Stuart's
life and know that he helped save four lives," said Colleen.
"Organ donors, like Stuart, help others who need our help. Organ donation
is very generous," said his sister Amanda.
One individual donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and
enhance the lives of up to 75 others through the donation of tissue.
"Organ donation is very special to me. I was only two-years-old when I
had my transplant. I was sad that somebody had to die for me to live. But, I
know I would donate my organs if anything happened to me," said Nathaniel
Lampitoc, 10-years-old.
Today, in Ontario there are 1665 men, women and children on the waiting
list.
"Make your wishes known. Talk to your family about organ and tissue
donation." said Markel. "It's critical to share your decision with your
family, as they will be asked for final consent to donate your organs after
your death."
