Cloverdale Mall wins inaugural humanitarian award from the International Council of Shopping Centers



    TORONTO, Sept. 26 /CNW/ - In support of humanitarian programs being
undertaken at shopping centres throughout Canada, the Educational Foundation
of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. (ICSC) is pleased to
announce that in recognition of outstanding corporate social responsibility
leadership Cloverdale Mall, located in Etobicoke, Ontario, has received its
inaugural Canadian ICSC Social Responsibility Award. The award, which will be
given annually, recognizes outstanding humanitarian service by a shopping
centre or shopping centre development or management company within Canada. The
award was presented tonight as part of the ICSC Canadian Shopping Centre
Awards which honors the most outstanding examples of shopping centre
marketing, design and operations programs throughout Canada.
    The Canadian ICSC Social Responsibility Award encourages and recognizes
the humanitarian approach to issues of global concern within Canada. Whether
the issue be global health concerns, the environment, poverty or human rights,
companies or shopping centres demonstrating significant contributions to a
social or community issue, charitable foundation, or other global humanitarian
cause(s) are eligible for the Canadian ICSC Social Responsibility Award.
    Cloverdale Mall received the Social Responsibility Award for its "Help 2
Raise A Roof Of Hope" campaign. Cloverdale Mall created its "Help 2 Raise A
Roof Of Hope" to assist the Dorothy Ley Hospice foundation raise funds to
construct Toronto's first free-standing residential palliative care hospice.
The campaign, which raised $22,360 in 22 days, featured the selling of
customized paper donation shingles on which individuals could honor the name
of a loved one, survivor of a life-threatening illness or healthcare
professional. Each donated shingle was displayed on a large faux roof
structure in centre court of the Cloverdale Mall. The "Help 2 Raise A Roof Of
Hope" campaign represented the highest cash donation ever raised through a
centre-sponsored effort in Cloverdale's 50-year history.
    Cloverdale Mall is managed by Bentall Retail Services, LP, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada and is owned by bcIMC Realty Corporation, Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada.
    The recipient of the Canadian ICSC Social Responsibility Award receives a
commemorative plaque and, more importantly, the philanthropic organization or
cause that the centre or company's program supported, receives a $5,000
donation from the ICSC Educational Foundation.
    "Shopping centres have a social responsibility to the communities in
which they serve and ICSC, through the work of its Educational Foundation, is
pleased to be able to recognize those shopping centres and companies that have
taken this responsibility to heart by creating programs that far exceed the
normal course of business," said ICSC President and CEO, Michael P. Kercheval.
"Cloverdale Mall's 'Help 2 Raise A Roof Of Hope' campaign is an exceptional
example of how a shopping centre can make a difference in the community in
which they serve," Kercheval added.

    Established in 1988, the ICSC Educational Foundation is the non-profit
public charity of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Inc. (ICSC).
As the grant-making arm of ICSC, the Foundation serves as a conduit for
philanthropic giving by ICSC members. Embodying the belief that "Shopping
Centers Make a Difference," the ICSC Educational Foundation promotes and
supports graduate-level college and university programs, institutes, and
centers involved in the study of real estate and retail commerce.

    Founded in 1957, ICSC is the premier global trade association of the
