TORONTO, July 10 /CNW/ - In continuing efforts to effectively drive their
community sustainability programs, the City of Pickering is empowering their
residents by making them part of the program. Environmental calculators were
introduced on their website this week. These user friendly innovative tools
enable residents to do a home or place of business audit on their personal use
of water, energy and vehicle use. These are an eye opener to those of us who
feel we are responsible consumers. This can be a surprise for the most
seasoned "green" thinkers.
The water calculator gives you an insight as to how much water can be
wasted in your home. You will be astonished at the amount of water you use and
take for granted every day.
The energy calculator measures your power usage. After using this
calculator, you will be walking through your house and turning off lights and
The idling calculator adds up the amount of time spent creating
destructive emissions and wasting fuel.
These simple exercises bring it home on an individual basis. This is not
another "green" report. It's not another article on sustainability. This is a
clear measure of your own personal use.
Raising awareness of our impact on the environment is the first step in
getting people on board. It's not just up to the municipalities to conserve
energy, it comes down to each and every one of us to do our part in ensuring
our children will have clean water and air and a sustainable environment in
which to thrive.
How do you measure up?
