CIC Offers Support for Canadian Funding of the PA

OTTAWA, Dec. 17 /CNW/ - Responding to today's announcement by Foreign
Minister Maxime Bernier to increase Canada's level of support for Palestinian
reform and development, the Canada-Israel Committee (CIC) offered its guarded
optimism.
"The announcement today speaks to Canada's enhanced role in the
Israel-Palestinian peace process over the past two years. With our increased
role - particularly in the security realm - comes the added responsibility of
ensuring that Canadian assistance benefits from careful monitoring and
measures to ensure accountability and transparency," stated Moshe Ronen,
National Chair of the CIC.
"True peace between Israelis and the Palestinians can only be achieved on
the basis of an economically viable and democratic Palestinian Authority. To
that end, the PA must undertake real democratic and institutional reforms,
such as building an independent judiciary, developing business and industry,
and creating the infrastructure for a successful civil society.
"The CIC welcomes Canada's increased role in assisting to bring about
this reality."
