Christal Films Goes Green - Christal Films celebrates Earth Day with three new acquisitions about global environmental issues

TORONTO, April 20 /CNW Telbec/ - Christal is delighted to have secured
the Canadian distribution rights for Alastair Fothergill's documentary Earth
from BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media. Earth was also recently acquired by
Lionsgate for US, UK and Australian distribution and is scheduled for
theatrical release in these countries and in Canada in fall 2007.
Five years in the making, Earth takes audiences on a journey around the
planet, using the sun as a guide to follow the migratory journeys of an
elephant, a humpback whale and a polar bear. Directed by Alastair Fothergill,
the theatrical movie is a companion piece to the BBC series Planet Earth.
Created by the team behind the feature film Deep Blue, the 90-minute epic has
been shot in 35mm and high definition.
Christal Films has also acquired the rights for Mark Leiren-Young's debut
feature The Green Chain from Canada's Middle Child Films, Perpetual Motion
Productions and Donna Wong-Juliani. The film is scheduled for release in late
2007 or early 2008.
The Green Chain examines the battle between loggers and environmentalists
using the framework of a series of inter-linking monologues which are inspired
by the true dramas taking place each day in North America's forests. The film
stars an acclaimed group of actors including Tricia Helfer and Tahmoh Penikett
from TV's Battlestar Galactica, Genie and Gemini award winners August
Schellenberg (The New World, Black Robe) and Brendan Fletcher (RV, Tideland),
Gemini Award winner Babz Chula, and Vancouver actors Jillian Fargey
(Mount Pleasant) and Scott McNeil (Sleeping With Strangers). Mark Leiren-Young
is one of Canada's most prolific and versatile writers. He has written for
virtually every medium, in almost every genre. He is an Earthvision award
winner for his eco-comedy Greenpieces and an acclaimed screenwriter,
playwright and journalist. Most recently, Leiren-Young was part of the writing
team on the CHUM/Lifetime TV series Blood Ties.
The third film in Christal's enviro-slate is FierceLight: When Spirit
Meets Action, filmmaker Velcrow Ripper's follow-up to his Genie Award winning
documentary Scared Sacred from Executive Producers Mark Achbar
(The Corporation) & Betsy Carson, Producer Cherilyn Kay Hawrysh and
co-produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
FierceLight captures the exciting movement of spiritual activism that is
exploding around the planet, and the powerful personalities that are igniting
it. Fueled by the belief that "another world is possible" Ripper heads out on
an inspiring global journey to trace spiritual activism's historical roots and
uncover modern manifestations of what Martin Luther King Jr. called 'Love in
Action,' and Gandhi called 'Soul Force'; what they are calling 'Fierce Light'.
Ripper will meet the greatest spiritual activists in the world today,
witnessing the 'Fierce Light' that gives them hope and power in an era of
turmoil and transformation. Shot in New Zealand, Africa, India, Sri Lanka and
Vietnam, FierceLight: When Spirit Meets Action is scheduled for release in
mid-2008.
