CHCA Sees Federal Budget as an Opportunity for Home Care

OTTAWA, March 20 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Home Care Association (CHCA)
views the federal budget as an opportunity for the provinces and territories
to continue their investment in home care, an integral component of a
sustainable and effective health care system. Yesterday's budget announcement
emphasized the values Canadians place on our health care system and our
federal government's commitment to ensuring that seniors continue to have a
good quality of life as they age.
While federal monies were not earmarked for home care, the additional
funding announced in yesterday's budget will support health care priorities
across the country. Jurisdictions can demonstrate leadership to their
constituents by continuing the momentum of transitioning to health care
systems that address health issues proactively. By expanding the contribution
of the home care sector in health promotion, acute care substitution and the
management of long-term conditions, an improved system can be realized.
The CHCA encourages provincial and territorial governments to include
home care in two key areas identified in the federal budget - the application
of electronic records and the collection of timely, accurate health
information.
"A well resourced home care sector will improve access to health care
services for all Canadians," said Nadine Henningsen, Executive Director. In a
recent study over 80 percent of Canadians surveyed believed that more home and
community care programs would improve the health system (Health Care in Canada
2006).
Canadians live, work, and grow old in their communities. The health
system must focus on timely appropriate access to community based health care
to support our aging population.
