SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, May 9 /CNW/ - Celia Ross, former president of
Algoma University, has been acclaimed as the New Democrat candidate for
Sault Ste. Marie in the lead up to the October 6th provincial election.
Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath offered her congratulations: "Celia
Ross is a strong, intelligent, community leader who will be a voice for
Northern Ontario and Northern families. She is a role model for women
across our province and a candidate who will tackle challenges in the
North. I'm thrilled to have her as part of our New Democrat team."
Dr. Ross began her teaching career at Algoma University College in 1982
in the French Department. She was named president in 1998. In ten short
years Dr. Ross guided Algoma University as it became an independent
degree-granting institution with its own Charter. During her tenure as
president she oversaw an ambitious building plan, as well as an
expansion of student enrolment and course offerings.
"Celia Ross is a woman who knows how to deliver for Sault Ste. Marie.
She's not afraid to cooperate with people to get the job done. Her
actions as Algoma University president speak for themselves. Her record
as a community leader is proven. Voters in Sault Ste. Marie can count
on Celia Ross to be their voice in Queen's Park," said Horwath.
