CAW President Visits Kitchener to Rally Members for Federal Election

KITCHENER, ON, Oct. 2 /CNW/ - CAW President Ken Lewenza will be in
Kitchener this afternoon for the first time as the union's national president,
laying out the CAW's platform of strategic voting. This includes targeted
support for specific candidates, with the goal of preventing a Stephen Harper
Conservative majority.
"If Stephen Harper gets the majority government that he's looking for,
years from now we won't be able to recognize this country," said Lewenza.
On behalf of the union, Lewenza will be throwing his support behind
Liberal candidate Orlando DaSilva, who is running in the Kitchener-Conestoga
riding. The seat is currently held by Conservative MP Harold Albrecht who has
been accused by local workers as ignoring their plight as thousands of
family-supporting manufacturing jobs disappear from the community.

    Pre-election Rally
    Today: Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 3:45 p.m.
Location: Kitchener Frame Plant parking lot
1011 Homer Watson Blvd., Kitchener, ON N2G 4G8

The demonstrators will then march to MP Harold Albrecht's office located
at: 153 Country Hill Drive, Kitchener, Ontario. The event will include
speeches by Lewenza, Kitchener-Waterloo Director for the YWCA Elizabeth Clarke
and CAW local union presidents.
In the Cambridge riding, the CAW will be endorsing Liberal candidate Gord
Zeilstra and in an ABC strategic voting strategy (Anyone But Conservative) in
all other local ridings.
In a region marked by job loss, the recent economic downturn and
government inaction are top concerns for CAW members across the Waterloo
region. Recent job losses include the January closure of tool-and-die shop
Ledco (100 jobs), the pending closure of Martinrea Kitchener Frame (800 jobs),
the closure of snowblower and lawnmower manufacturer MTD later this month
(240 jobs), the May closure of Engel Plastics in Guelph (225 jobs lost) and
the last November lay-off at auto parts maker Lear Corporation (284 jobs),
just to name a few.
The meeting is part of a leadership election tour by Lewenza to various
communities across Ontario over the next two weeks. For more information on
the tour, please visit: www.caw.ca
