TORONTO, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - CAW members employed by Air Canada have turned
down an early tentative agreement with Air Canada and Aeroplan by a margin of
78 per cent.
Thousands of workers attended a series of ratification meetings across
the country over the last two weeks, where they expressed frustrations over
years of concessions (as a result of CCAA), poor scheduling practices, and a
lack of job security.
"Workers rightfully expect to be compensated after years of sacrifice and
giving back to this company, said Leslie Dias, president of CAW Local 2002.
"The agreement fell short of our members' expectations."
"Since the restructuring of Air Canada, the company has been allowed to
sell off its most profitable segments to the detriment of the core business,"
said CAW National President Ken Lewenza. "Air Canada workers are refusing to
bear the brunt of these poor business decisions."
In the weeks to come, the CAW will be bringing together workplace
representatives from across the country to strategize on issues facing the
workforce. As well, the union will be conducting a series of proposal meetings
where priorities for the next round of negotiations will be set.
CAW Local 2002 represents nearly 5,000 workers at Air Canada and Aeroplan
The current agreement will remain in force until its expiry on May 31, 2009.
