Carleton Students Host Vote Mob Today

OTTAWA, April 18 /CNW/ - Today, Carleton University students will be holding a Vote Mob, a growing trend of recording a video of students on campuses across Canada, aimed to encourage youth to vote in the Federal Election.

"The Vote Mob movement is a response to Rick Mercer's rant urging young people to get out and vote, precisely because many politicians count on youth staying away from the polls. Vote Mobs are one way of encouraging students to pay attention to election campaigns and engaging in the political process," says Meera Chander, Vice President Finance for the Carleton University Students' Association.

By gathering a diverse mob of students together under the Vote Mob banner, organizers hope to show students and other potential voters that politics don't have to be taboo, divisive or boring. Students will be given the opportunity to highlight the reasons why they are getting out to the polls on May 2nd, whether it be more funding for post-secondary education, health care, or addressing issues such as climate change and women's rights.

The video will be filmed on Carleton campus, in the Quad and surrounding areas. Filming will commence at 1:00pm. Ottawa Centre candidates have been invited to join students in Oliver's Pub and Patio, 1st floor Unicentre, from 3:30pm - 4:30pm. Students will have an opportunity to meet their local candidates and ask them about the issues that are important to them.
