Canwest hits it big at this year's Gemini Awards



    
                   Dominates news and lifestyle categories
                Reinforces commitment to Canadian programming
    

    TORONTO, Aug. 26 /CNW/ - With over 90 nominations, Canwest is primed to
shine at this year's Gemini Awards. With notable achievements in
critically-acclaimed dramatic series, lifestyle and news, Canwest will be the
standout when the awards take place on November 28th with a star-studded gala
event airing on E! Network and Showcase beginning at 9:00 pm ET.
    The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television revealed the nominees for the
23rd Annual Gemini Awards earlier today - For the complete list of nominees,

    "This year's nominations are a true reflection Canwest's commitment to
showcasing the best in Canadian television," says Barb Williams, Executive
Vice President, Content, Canwest Broadcasting. "Canwest is home to some of the
most successful Canadian series and we are thrilled that the Academy has
recognized the tireless efforts of all our partners in the production
community who work diligently to bring exceptional Canadian stories, people
and characters into millions of homes everyday."
    For the first time ever, Canwest swept the category of Best Lifestyle/
Practical Information Series with all five nominations belonging to Canwest
shows. Canwest lifestyle programming was also nominated in a variety of other
non-fiction categories, including Project Runway Canada for Best Reality
Program.
    Canwest programming also stood out in the comedy department. Kenny vs.
Spenny, Rent-A-Goalie and Cock'd Gunns all received nominations for Best
Comedy Program or Series, making three out of the six nominations Canwest
shows.
    Canwest dominated the news programming categories, with two nominations
for Best Newscast and a Best News Anchor nod for Kevin Newman. Also recognized
was Global National's coverage of the Budget 2008 and Remembrance Day 2007,
each earning a nomination in the Best News Special Event Coverage category.
    With 13 nominations, the critically acclaimed Durham County is one of the
most nominated series in this year's race with a nod for Best Dramatic Series,
and a double nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing
Leading Dramatic Role for both Hugh Dillon and Justin Louis.
