CanWest announces gift in memory of the late Hon. Peter M. Liba

$15,000 endowed gift will create new award for the Lieutenant Governor's
    Youth Experience Program

WINNIPEG, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - To honour one of CanWest's founders and a
great champion of Manitoba, the late Peter M. Liba, CanWest Global
Communications Corp. has announced a gift of $15,000 to establish the CanWest
Peter M. Liba Memorial Bursary which will be awarded annually to students who
participate in the Lieutenant Governor's Youth Experience Program.
The Lieutenant Governor's Youth Experience Program was established to
challenge Manitoba youth to improve their school performance, become
participants in community events and overcome obstacles to reach their full
potential. One of the hallmarks of the program is a series of incentives for
students who reach measurable goals during the program. The CanWest Peter M.
Liba Memorial Bursary will be awarded to the top student graduating from the
program and will be directed towards the costs of supporting their
post-secondary education.
"Peter Liba was a great supporter of programs to help disadvantaged youth
in this province reach their potential, both as a businessman, a leader in the
community, and as Manitoba's 22nd Lieutenant Governor," said David Asper,
Executive Vice President, CanWest Global Communications Corp. "We think this
gift and the establishment of this fund will be a lasting legacy to that
commitment and is an appropriate way to honour his memory."
"Our family is thrilled that CanWest has decided to honour the memory of
Peter by creating this endowment" stated Shirley Liba. "Peter truly believed
that education was how people could achieve their life goals and become more
engaged in their families, and in their communities."
The fund will be established within the Winnipeg Foundation,
organizations or individuals who would like to contribute to the fund are
encouraged to do so by contacting the Winnipeg Foundation and making the
contribution to the CanWest Peter M. Liba Memorial Bursary Fund.
