Cancer care gets an $11 million boost

Donation from Irving Greenberg family goes to Queensway Carleton Hospital
Foundation and Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

    OTTAWA, March 25 /CNW Telbec/ - One of Ottawa's leading philanthropists,
Dan Greenberg, today announced his family's $11 million donation in support of
cancer care in eastern Ontario. This significant donation will benefit cancer
care across the region as it is shared by two cancer champions. Nine million
dollars will go to Queensway Carleton Hospital in support of expansion to
several cancer care programs and in support of the construction of a new
cancer centre which is scheduled to open in late 2009. Two million dollars
will go to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation in support of their vision
for cancer programs throughout eastern Ontario.
This donation is the largest individual donation ever received in by
either the Queensway Carleton Hospital or the Ottawa Regional Cancer
Foundation.
In appreciation for the impact of this donation, and in recognition of
the tremendous volunteer leadership of both Dan Greenberg and his late father,
Irving Greenberg, Tom Schonberg, President and CEO of Queensway Carleton
Hospital announced that the new facility will be named "The Irving Greenberg
Family Cancer Centre". The new Cancer Centre will be a partner site of The
Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program.
"We are honoured and grateful that Dan and his family have made this
donation to our "Building on Our Strengths Campaign"," said Carey Garrett,
Chair of the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation. "The Greenbergs have a
long history with QCH - our first capital expansion campaign over 20 years ago
was chaired by Irving Greenberg, Dan's father. Throughout our history, the
Greenberg family has been there to support our hospital and to ensure that our
community is getting the quality care it needs close to home."
"The Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre will bring cancer care closer
to home for residents in west Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley," according to Tom
Schonberg. "This donation - the largest donation ever made to QCHF - will
bring untold benefits to patients and their families during their journey
through cancer care. We are honoured as well that Dan Greenberg is the Chair
of our "Building on Our Strengths" Capital Campaign - his example of
philanthropy and personal leadership gives us great confidence.
"We are thrilled to have the Greenberg family join us in the fight for
cancer survivorship in our community," said Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation
President and CEO, Linda Eagen. "Through partnerships like these, we will all
be part of the answer to cancer."
"Cancer has had a dramatic impact on my family and friends over the
years. My dad died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma almost twenty years ago. It was a
tough struggle for my father and for our whole family. My aunt died of cancer
six months later. My other aunt had died of cancer a year before. For me, and
for our family, this gift is our vote for hope - we are so impressed with the
quality and compassion of care we see expressed everyday at Queensway Carleton
Hospital. We are so impressed with the vision and impact of Ottawa Regional
Cancer Foundation on our community," said Dan Greenberg about his family's
decision to support cancer care within these two organizations "We are proud
of the quiet and dedicated partnership these two great organizations have
forged. We know that our gift will help both organizations continue to make a
difference for cancer patients and their families - from prevention and
research, through diagnosis, surgery, treatment and survivorship."
