Canadian students recognized for their community involvement

MONTREAL, May 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canada Millennium Scholarship
Foundation is proud to salute the 1,125 recipients of its 2009 Millennium
Excellence Entrance Awards. Selected from among 9,262 applicants in a
nationwide competition, the laureates were chosen for their outstanding
achievements in leadership, social innovation, academic performance and
community service.
"An investment in the education of these outstanding citizens is an
investment in our society's future," said Norman Riddell, executive director
and CEO of the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. "These individuals
have already demonstrated their ability to better the world around them; they
know how to make a difference - something they will continue to do long after
the Foundation's mandate winds down at the end of this year."
The goal of the excellence award program is to assist students who
demonstrate an outstanding commitment to fulfilling their community's unmet
needs in pursuing a post-secondary education. This year's entrance award
laureates have distinguished themselves by initiatives ranging from
environmental stewardship to social justice, and plan to pursue careers in a
variety of sectors, such as public service, the sciences and business, upon
the completion of their degrees.

There are three levels of entrance awards:

    - National - 121 awards of $25,000.
    - Provincial/Territorial - 262 awards of $20,500.
    - Local - 742 awards of $4,500.

The number of local and provincial/territorial awards are distributed
proportionally in each province and territory based on population. The
national awards are allocated to the most exceptional applicants throughout
Canada.
