Canadian Society of Nuclear Medicine - Press release

OTTAWA, Dec. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Nuclear Medicine Community is
very concerned about the impact that the shutdown of the NRU reactor by the
CNSC and AECL is having on patients. This impact is being diluted by
discussions not directly related to patient care. This decision has already
affected critical medical management decisions and the numbers affected will
escalate as the shutdown progresses through the next several weeks. In North
America, approximately 30,000 patients per week in Canada and 400,000 per week
in the USA have nuclear medicine scans. The loss of this scanning capability
impacts all areas of medicine, especially patients with cancer, heart lung and
kidney disease. The CSNM wishes to emphasize that the whole community needs to
work together to ensure that NRU reactor reinstatement be expedited as quickly
as possible so that patient care is maintained and this incident is never
repeated.
