Canadian Skills Competition launch

    SASKATOON, SK, June 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Skills/Compétences Canada, the
national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled
trades and technologies to Canadian youth, will today host the Opening
Ceremonies of the 13th Canadian Skills Competition in Saskatoon at TCU place.
Skills/Compétences Canada holds annual Olympic-style competitions that
test the skills of young people at secondary and post-secondary levels in
trade and technology areas. Gold medalists from each province or territory
compete in the annually hosted Canadian Skills Competition. More than five
hundred (500) Canadian youth, accompanied by their coaches and parents, will
gather in Saskatoon June 6-9 for what is perhaps our nation's largest and most
exciting endeavour to promote the careers in skilled trades and technologies
that industry so desperately needs.
"The event is a great display of partnership between business industry,
education and government and provides a tremendous opportunity for young
Canadians to demonstrate the high level of skill required in trade and
technology careers," says Terry Cooke, President of Skills/Compétences Canada.
Along with competitors from each province/territory there will also be
members of Team Canada, participants from Jamaica, Ireland and the United
Kingdom who are preparaing for the 2007 WorldSkills Competition.
"Participating in skilled trades and technology competitions represents a
great experience for these individuals to put their skills into practice for
the upcoming WorldSkills event that will take place in Japan from November 14-
21," says Shaun Thorson, Executive Director of Skills/Compétences Canada.
Skills/Compétences Canada is hosting the national event at Prairieland
Park and the SIAST Kelsey campus which will house more than 40 contest areas
which are open to the general public. Industry, government, and education
displays will showcase career opportunities in trades and technologies as well
as provide information about the educational requirements and supports for
these occupations.
