Canadian Red Cross promotes the value of its volunteers

OTTAWA, April 11 /CNW/ - The Canadian Red Cross honours National Volunteer Week, a time to say a special thank you to the tens of thousands of volunteers from coast to coast who donate their time and energy to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Canada.

"Over the past year, disasters at home and abroad have relied on dedicated volunteers who have helped provide humanitarian assistance to thousands of people in need," says Conrad Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross.  "These are volunteers who work in Red Cross offices serving clients, giving presentations and providing administrative support during regular hours and those who volunteer nights and weekends to attend council meetings, raise funds and train for and respond to hundreds of local disasters every year."

The value volunteers bring to the Canadian Red Cross is incomparable.  A recent report from the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies provides hard evidence that volunteers deliver exceptional value for donor dollars by extending the paid workforce.  This study revealed there are 11 Red Cross volunteers for every paid staff member in Canada, with the average annual economic value being $1,190 per volunteer.   In the United States and Canada alone, Red Cross volunteers contribute over $843 Million worth of services annually.

"Throughout the year, as I travel across the country meeting with volunteers and staff, I am constantly reminded of the critical and difficult work carried out by volunteers every day," adds Sauvé.  "The strength of the relationship between volunteers and staff is one of the most unique and important measures of success for any non-profit organization."

Today, the volunteer network is as active as ever before delivering a wide range of services to improve the lives of the most vulnerable and contributing to a strong civil society in Canada. The Red Cross Red Crescent community based volunteer network and workforce reaches around 30 million people worldwide each year during disasters alone and even more through community development initiatives that reach vulnerable people each day.  The value of their local knowledge and long-term commitment simply cannot be replaced or calculated.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and over 185 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Our mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.
