SASKATOON, Nov. 5, 2011 /CNW/ - The Canadian Olympic Committee is proud
to partner for another year of successful Gold Medal Plates fundraising
events. The Prairieland Park Trade & Convention Centre will play host
to this year's event in Saskatoon tonight.
"Gold Medal Plates has been an outstanding success," said COC President
Marcel Aubut. "The money raised by these events will help prepare our
Canadian athletes for London 2012, just as it helped our athletes in
Vancouver in 2010."
Some of the athletes attending the Saskatoon event include: Olympic
medallists Catriona Le May Doan (Speed Skating), Adam Kreek (Rowing),
Chris Le Bihan (Bobsleigh) and Cori Morris (Curling), among others.
At least, $1 million of the revenues generated from GMP events across
Canada will help prepare our Canadian athletes for London 2012 and
subsequent Olympic Games through high performance programs such as Own
Proceeds from Gold Medal Plates go to the Canadian Olympic Foundation,
supporting programs that further Canadian high performance athletes'
pursuit of excellence on the world stage - programs like Own The Podium
and the COC's Athlete Excellence Fund. Gold Medal Plates has generated
a total of $5 million for Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes
Gold Medal Plates is the ultimate celebration of Canadian excellence in
food, wine, athletic achievement and entertainment. Each Gold Medal
Plates event will feature superb wines and the premier chefs in each
city, in a competition to crown a gold, silver and bronze medal
culinary team in each city.
The chefs competing for top prize in Saskatoon are Derek Cotton (Bliss
Restaurant, Saskatoon), Kevin Dahlsjo (Two by Dahlsjo, Prince Albert),
Vince Lapointe (Travelodge Hotel, Saskatoon), Brent Lloyd (Simple Chef,
Saskatoon), Ryan Marquis (Delta Bessborough Hotel, Saskatoon), Anthony
McCarthy (Saskatoon Club, Saskatoon), Leo Pantel (Conexus Arts Centre,
Regina), Trevor Robertson (Radisson Hotel, Saskatoon), Martin Snow
(Creek Bistro, Regina), JP Vives (La Bodega, Regina).
The competition comes to a head at the Canadian Culinary Championships,
where the nine winners will compete for the ultimate prize February 10th and 11th, 2012, in Kamloops, B.C.
The theme for this year's events will be "London Calls: Canada Will
Answer," referencing next year's Olympic Games in London, England.
