Canadian Diabetes Association fuels a healthy lifestyle with new resource



    TORONTO, June 19 /CNW/ - The Canadian Diabetes Association today released
a new publication, Beyond the Basics: Lifestyle Choices for Diabetes
Prevention and Management, designed to help people with diabetes - or those at
risk for the disease - make the right lifestyle choices to maintain a healthy
body weight, manage blood glucose levels, and to delay or prevent the onset of
diabetes.
    The new manual focuses on lifestyle choices and is packed with a variety
of consumer-friendly advice on lifestyle and multicultural topics. With
chapters on traveling, healthy snacking, weight management and body image as
well as eating healthy on a tight budget, this resource is a must-have for all
Canadians. The resource offers practical tips and advice on navigating food
choices from around the globe for good diabetes management.
    "Whether you have diabetes or not, the Canadian Diabetes Association's
new Beyond the Basics Resource provides information that can benefit anyone by
helping to improve their lifestyle," said Sharon Zeiler, RD, Senior Manager,
Nutrition Initiatives and Strategies, Canadian Diabetes Association. "The goal
of this manual is to promote good health and assist with diabetes prevention
and management."
    Beyond the Basics: Lifestyle Choices for, Diabetes Prevention and
Management is the third tool in the Beyond the Basics series for people to
learn from and discuss with their health-care team.
    "The new Beyond the Basics resource is designed for anyone who wants to
have a healthier lifestyle and for those with diabetes to contribute to better
health management," said Eleeta Armit, RD, CDE, Chair of the Beyond the Basics
Committee. "It is also intended for health professionals to help people make
the necessary choices to prevent and manage diabetes."
    "The Beyond the Basics manual has all the ingredients for people with
diabetes and their families to eat well on a tight budget and ensure their
homes are stocked with choices for healthy eating," said Zeiler. "The Resource
is full of information for special populations including children, where rates
of type 2 diabetes are on the rise, and tips for expectant mothers living with
or at risk of diabetes."
    Representatives from different areas of diabetes, diabetes education and
research, contributed to the resource, which was reviewed by experts in each
field to ensure that the information is accurate and based on solid scientific
evidence.
    The Beyond the Basics Resource is available to consumers and health-care
professionals, for the cost of $19.95 + GST and shipping, from the Canadian
