TORONTO, July 4 /CNW/ - Even those who demand unlimited access to women's
"right to choose" acknowledge that abortion is an action tinged with regret.
Few express pride in having had an abortion. Many have found both the decision
to abort and the outcome traumatic.
The Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute affirms the right to existence
of every human being from conception onwards. Deliberate destruction of human
life should never be a choice even in times of great distress.
We are a well-meaning society and can create options to further women's
rights and extend their choices. For example, why not expand programmes and
agencies which already support women and unborn children?
Dr. Morgentaler's Order of Canada has been achieved through destroying
unborn children. This sad situation is possible because unborn children have
no legal rights in Canada. Does this make sense?
Abortion is not a triumph for medicine. It is not a triumph for women. It
is not a triumph for Canadian law. The Order of Canada, seen in this light, is
hardly a triumph for Dr. Morgentaler.
