Canadian Business Groups Applaud Bold, Competitive Vision Set Out by Competition Policy Review Panel

    OTTAWA, June 26 /CNW Telbec/ - A broad coalition of Canadian business
groups welcomes the bold vision and ambitious scope of the final report of the
Competition Policy Review Panel and calls on the federal government to secure
the economic future of all Canadians by acting quickly on the report's
recommendations.
The group commended the federal government for building on the long-term
competitiveness strategy laid out in Advantage Canada by appointing this panel
of eminent experts last summer. It also congratulated the Panel, under the
leadership of Lynton "Red" Wilson, for challenging Canadians with such an
ambitious agenda.
Canada's business leaders are committed to driving the progress of our
companies and our country. The members of the coalition, united in the belief
that taking action now is critical to Canada's future prosperity, have agreed
to monitor implementation of the Panel's recommendations and will reconvene in
one year's time to issue a report card on the government's progress.
In a global marketplace in which new competitors are emerging every day,
complacency will spell disaster. The opportunities for Canada to lead and
succeed have never been more compelling, but both public policy and corporate
strategies must adapt to the realities of this transforming global economy if
Canadians are to continue to enjoy a rising standard of living in the years
ahead.
The foundation for Canada's recent 16 consecutive years of economic
growth was laid by policy choices made years earlier. To pave the way for the
next generation of growth, the federal government must act on the Panel's
recommendations and put in place a policy framework that will foster Canadian
competitiveness and enable Canadian companies to grow and succeed at home and
abroad.
Canada and Canadians have greatly benefitted from open trade and
investment policies. To ensure our prosperity, standard of living and quality
of life, Canada must continue to be open to the world.
The bold and broad report released today by the Competition Policy Review
Panel sets Canada on the right path and all of the coalition's members are
committed to working with the federal government toward the shared goal of a
stronger, more competitive and more prosperous Canada.
