Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure closing in Calgary

CALGARY, Sept. 27 /CNW/ - "Pink is the Word. Pass it on." Breast cancer
will touch each and every one of us at some point in our lives. With that in
mind, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT Region announced
that the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the
Cure will come to a close this weekend at Southcentre Mall in Calgary. The
exhibit will be open to the public September 27 and 28.
The interactive Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS
Tour for the Cure has been spreading the word this summer to Albertans about
risk reduction, early detection and overall breast health. At the exhibit,
people become empowered with Pink knowledge, and are encouraged to share that
information with those they love. In collaboration with TELUS, the Government
of Alberta and supporting sponsor, Safeway, the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure has travelled to 17 events
or locations throughout the province.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the
Cure not only encourages people to learn about breast cancer and the facts,
but to make a commitment to the cause by making a Pink Promise. A Pink Promise
could be as simple as eating well, becoming active, getting involved or being
breast aware. A Pink Promise can also be customized for each person. Pink
Promises have been collected in each community, with a running tally shown on
a screen within the exhibit. Each stop on the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure is individually represented
by a visual sound wave. With each promise, the sound waves build. So far, the
Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure has
collected almost 2700 Pink Promises. This weekend will be the last chance for
Albertans to visit the exhibit to make their Pink Promise and be a part of the
2008 Tour. At the end of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT
TELUS Tour for the Cure, these individual sound waves form one unique sound
wave, representing Albertans uniting to create a future without breast cancer.
"We are thrilled so many Albertans have visited the Tour this summer, but
there is still a chance to be a part of history. Make today the day you get
informed about breast health," Barb McGregor, Board Chair for the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT Region declared. "Become empowered by
the facts, make a Pink Promise and take action! One in eight women in Alberta
will be affected by breast cancer in her lifetime. Do everything you can to
reduce your risk."
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the
Cure travelled to 16 communities in Alberta from May to September, launching
in Edmonton on May 21 and will come to a close in Calgary on September 28. It
has been the first Tour of its kind in Alberta. Visitors can gaze at a giant
exterior shaped like a pink ribbon, gain information from panels and
resources, take a myth-busters quiz, make a Pink Promise, register for a Run
and walk away with collectible buttons. There is something for everyone.
"At TELUS we give where we live," said Joanne Beaton, TELUS
vice-president of Operator Services. "This terrible disease has the potential
to impact the lives of so many Albertans, including many members of the TELUS
family who live, work and serve in our communities. Through our support for
the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure
we're proud to be doing our part to raise awareness and help make a
difference."
"This educational exhibit enables us to bring information about breast
cancer to communities province-wide," said Dr. Raj Sherman, Parliamentary
Assistant, Alberta Health and Wellness and the lead in Alberta on promoting
healthy communities. "Through a greater awareness of this disease, the
importance of regular screening and the ways in which women can reduce their
risk, we hope to significantly decrease the incidence of breast cancer in our
province and improve every woman's chances of survival. In this case, an ounce
of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure - this is about our
daughters', mothers' and grandmothers' lives. The Alberta government is
pleased to be a sponsor and a supporter of the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the Cure."

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Prairies/NWT TELUS Tour for the
Cure is brought to Albertans in partnership with TELUS, the Government of
Alberta, and supporting sponsor, Canada Safeway. The Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation - Prairies/NWT Region is a part of a leading national
volunteer-based organization dedicated to creating a future without breast
cancer. For more information about how you can get involved through donating,
