Canadian and International Nursing Leaders to Discuss Public Healthcare, Pandemic Preparedness, the Nursing Shortage and Solidarity without boundaries

ST. JOHN'S, NL, June 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The nursing shortage, public versus
private healthcare, pandemic preparedness and the need for solidarity among
nurses worldwide are just some of the issues to be discussed at the Canadian
Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) upcoming biennial convention.
Nursing leaders from across Canada will be joined by their international
counterparts in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, from June 5 to 8, 2007
at the Delta St. John's Hotel.
The convention, with the theme, 'Solidarity without boundaries,' will
attract 700 RNs to hear keynote speaker Dr. James Orbinski - Nobel Peace prize
winner and the first International President of Medecins Sans Frontières -
discuss the need for public healthcare here and globally. Dr. Orbinski is also
the founder and president of Dignitas International, a hybrid academic
non-governmental organization launched to provide and research community-based
care, prevention and treatment for those living with HIV in the developing
world.
"Nurses around the world are experiencing the effects of the nursing
shortage," notes Linda Silas, RN, President of the CFNU. "This makes nurses'
unions more relevant than ever, as working conditions for RNs worsen, as
poaching of nurses from countries that need their nurses occurs more
frequently, and as governments around the world grapple with healthcare
issues. Canadian nursing leaders will benefit from hearing the experiences of
nurses from other parts of the world."
Nursing leaders from Australia, Ireland and California will discuss the
need for nurses' unions, especially as the nursing shortage grows more severe
globally. Long-term care, what nurses need to know about the next pandemic and
Aboriginal cultural awareness are some of many workshop topics on offer to
attendees. An agenda of event highlights follows.

Founded in 1981, the CFNU is the largest organization of nurses in Canada
with 135,000 affiliated members from coast to coast.
