Canada's vehicle recycling program drives Ontario's future

Clean Air Foundation is at the wheel steering Ontario towards a cleaner
    and healthier environment

TORONTO, April 15 /CNW/ - Ontario residents will soon breathe easier
thanks to Canada's new vehicle recycling program, Retire Your Ride. The
program aims to prevent the release of 1,637,820 kilograms of smog-forming
emissions into Ontario's air by removing 30,330 vehicles from our roads before
the program ends on March 31, 2011. Managed and delivered locally by Clean Air
Foundation, Retire Your Ride effectively and efficiently recycles 1995 model
year or older vehicles in an environmentally responsible manner. This national
initiative is an effort to improve air quality and encourage the use of
sustainable transportation.
"Retire Your Ride is as rewarding as it is easy," says Fatima Dharsee,
Acting Executive Director of Clean Air Foundation. "If your car was built in
1995 or earlier, it actually produces 19 times more smog than a 2004 or newer
vehicle. This program offers Ontarians a voluntary and proactive environmental
measure they can take, not only preventing emissions but ensuring their old
car is responsibly recycled."
The strength of the program is in the three R's: Registration. Recycle.
Rewards.

    1. The process is simple: Contact Retire Your Ride at 1-877-773-1996 or
log on to www.retireyourride.ca. Note: vehicles must be "live" (in
running condition as well as registered and insured for the last six
        months).
    2. Seventy-five per cent of an average car's content by weight can be
recycled: All cars retired through Retire Your Ride are sent to a
certified, environmentally sound recycler, ensuring responsible
        recycling.
    3. Participants are rewarded: In Ontario, program participants are
eligible to receive a number of different rewards, including $300
cash. The Retire Your Ride network is continuously working to add new
and improved incentives to its roster.

It is not only Ontario residents that can participate in Retire Your
Ride. For the first time ever, there is a vehicle recycling program in every
province that is locally managed and delivered.
"The effectiveness of Retire Your Ride lies in its strong network of
local experts who deliver the program on the ground in communities across the
country," says Dharsee. "In less than a year, our organization has taken a
program that had limited availability across the country to a national vehicle
recycling program now available from coast to coast."
The Retire Your Ride network of delivery partners include the following:
Scrap-it in British Columbia; Climate Change Central in Alberta; Saskatchewan
Environmental Society in Saskatchewan; Manitoba Lung Association in Manitoba;
Clean Air Foundation in Ontario; Association québécoise de lutte contre la
pollution atmosphérique (AQLPA) in Quebec; the New Brunswick Lung Association
in New Brunswick; the Prince Edward Island Lung Association (in collaboration
with New Brunswick Lung Association) in Prince Edward Island; Clean Nova
Scotia in Nova Scotia; Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association in
Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Government of Canada has committed to investing up to $92 million to
the Retire Your Ride program to help Canadians recycle their older, higher
polluting vehicles and make sustainable transportation choices, leading to
reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
