Canada's Top Women Entrepreneurs: 10th annual PROFIT W100 ranking unveiled

Ten years later: Average annual revenue of winners doubles since
    inaugural ranking

TORONTO, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - There's never been a better time to be a female
entrepreneur. Why? Because more women are growing businesses in sectors
historically dominated by men such as construction, IT and manufacturing;
there are more female-centric networking and peer-mentoring groups to provide
support and resources; and there is better access to capital for female
business owners than there used to be.
This year's PROFIT W100 entrepreneurs are indeed go-getters, and their
businesses span a large range of sectors. Among the top W100 businesses are: a
staffing agency, a natural gas and electricity reseller, an ice block and
ice-sculpture producer, an architecture firm, a transport and warehouse
company, an advertising agency, a catering company and an IT services firm.
The average annual revenue of Canada's Top Women Entrepreneurs rose to
$36 million in their most recent fiscal year, up from $32 million a year
earlier and just $15 million when the ranking was established in 1999.
Few know this better than Marg Hachey, founder of Duocom Canada Inc. and
a repeat winner of the PROFIT W100 Top Women Entrepreneurs, who in this 10th
anniversary year earned ninth spot. Hachey struck out on her own in 1974
selling overhead projectors. Back then, as a lone woman in a sea of suits, she
lacked the role models and the business networks of her male colleagues. But
despite those challenges, today, her audio-visual services business has seven
locations across Canada and annual sales of more than $41 million.
"There are many diverse, fascinating stories among this year's PROFIT
W100 winners," says Ian Portsmouth, editor of PROFIT. "These are leaders who
may have faced tough challenges but came out ahead as strong businesswomen who
lead companies in a wide range of sectors. They are role models for all
entrepreneurs."
