TORONTO, March 2 /CNW/ - The Muslim Unity Group, an umbrella organization
consisting of Muslim organizations of both the Sunni and Shi'a branches of
Islam will be commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein the grandson of
Prophet Muhammad (peace be unto him) in 680 CE (61 AH) at a joint planned
event on March 8, 2008 at 6:00 pm at the Islamic Afghan Community of Canada,
22 Hobson Ave. Toronto, ON.
The continuing violence and deaths in some Muslim countries caused of the
Shi'a-Sunni divide is unacceptable. The Muslim Unity Group has decided,
therefore, to commemorate this event, which is tragic to all Muslims on
"Hussein Day" to send a message that the Muslims of Toronto stand together
against the continuing violence and advocate peace and brotherhood.
"The effects of the on-going violence in our "home" countries is felt by
all Muslims," says Gulam Sajan a spokesperson of the Shi'a community. "This
event will send an important message to all Muslims, that we are but one
people be you Sunni or Shi'a." His sentiments are echoed by Haroon Salamat,
Chair of the TARIC Islamic Centre, a Sunni institution who said, "Muslims
everywhere revere the Prophet and his family and pray that God sends his
blessings to them."
