Canada's New Government releases the results of indoor air sampling in the Valcartier area

VALCARTIER GARRISON, QC, Oct. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The results of the
evaluation of potential vapour intrusion of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the
Valcartier sector show that TCE vapours do not present a health risk for the
employees of the Garrison, the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC)
centre and the residents of Shannon and Val-Belair. The evaluation carried out
in fall 2006 and winter 2007 indicates that the TCE concentrations measured in
indoor air are generally very low. All concentrations are below the values
recommended by Health Canada for homes and workplaces, i.e., less than 5 and
20 (micro)g/m(3), respectively.
The study was conducted jointly by the two federal departments-National
Defence and Health Canada-and the Quebec Public Health Department, to ensure
that possible TCE migration from groundwater to the indoor air of buildings
and homes posed no health risks to workers or residents of the Valcartier
area.
Two sampling campaigns were conducted in order to measure TCE vapour
concentrations in indoor air, groundwater and soil. These campaigns were
carried out in and around buildings at the Valcartier Garrison, DRDC
Valcartier, as well as in Shannon and in the Laurentien borough (Val-Bélair
sector) of Quebec City. The Department of National Defence is planning to
conduct four additional sampling campaigns over the next year in order to
confirm the results obtained to date.
"The residents, employees and Canadian Forces members health is a
priority and this kind of project helps us to better understand the
situation", mentioned Colonel Karen Ritchie, Commander of the 5 Area Support
Group of the Valcartier Garrison at the presentation.
