Canada's new government announces $685,388 in funding for the Association québécoise de l'aérospatiale

MONTREAL, April 25 /CNW Telbec/ - Acting on behalf of the Honourable
Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic
Development, the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and
Government Services Canada and Minister responsible for the Montréal Region,
today announced the awarding of $685,388 in non-repayable funding to the
Association québécoise de l'aérospatiale.
This assistance will enable the organization to pursue its information,
guidance and inter-business networking activities as well as to foster the
local and international competitiveness of Quebec small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) in the sector.
"Aerospace is a highly-demanding sector rooted in constant innovation and
the ongoing quest for excellence. Even in the face of formidable challenges,
it has managed to maintain an enviable pace of growth and to achieve advances
that today offer our local enterprises promising opportunities for
development. The strength of the Quebec aerospace industry is based largely on
the presence of our many world-class contractors and equipment suppliers who
occupy a dominant position in the global marketplace and showcase the
excellence of Quebec production in all corners of the world," commented
Minister Blackburn.
"Our government is committed to supporting the growth of this industry in
Canada. Indeed, it is to that end that we recently announced a new research
and development initiative aimed at the aerospace, defence, security and space
industries. This strategic measure should result in the injection of nearly
$900 million in investments over the next five years to stimulate innovation
among Canadian enterprises," noted Minister Fortier.
In 2006, the Quebec aerospace industry posted sales of more than
$11.4 billion and employed 40,400 people, accounting for about 60% of all
Canadian activity in the sector. The Montréal region ranks as the world's
second largest aerospace capital in terms of employment density.
