TORONTO, Nov. 2 /CNW/ - Mike Holmes, star of Holmes on Homes(TM) on HGTV
Canada and Canada's Most Trusted Contractor will announce the recipients of
the first scholarships by The Holmes Foundation on Monday, November 5. Mike

Mike Holmes will be speaking at a press conference being held at 10:00am
at Lisaard House (990 Speedsville Road, Cambridge, ON). Lisaard House is the
location of one of the three renovation projects being done in partnership
with Conestoga College, using student labour from the Renovation Technician
program, and local contractors. They include renovations done to a cancer
hospice, a local area food bank and a home for teenage girls.
The announcements are being made on National Skilled Trades Day. This is
the annual day we should all take a moment to recognize the vital work being
done by people in the skilled trades-building homes, roads, schools, and in
Mike is concerned about the growing shortage of skilled workers in
Canada. The Conference Board of Canada predicts there will be a shortage of
about 1 million workers by 2020, due to an ageing workforce. In the next 7 to
10 years, 50% of current tradespeople plan to retire. We need to encourage
young people to choose a career in the skilled trades. Says Holmes, "It's
simple: The more skilled trades people we have, the less bad workmanship will
be out there. And the less I'll have to fix."
The mission of The Holmes Foundation is to ensure that all residential
renovation and construction in Canada is done right-the first time.
The Holmes Foundation will do this by partnering with schools, businesses
and governments to raise the profile and reputation of all skilled trades in
Canada, using Mike Holmes' reputation to encourage young people to pursue
careers in the skilled trades and to encourage employers to hire them. In
addition, The Holmes Foundation provides information on careers in the
building trades and will offer scholarships and bursaries to students pursuing
training in these trades.
