Canada's Family Physicians of the Year for 2007 Announced by The College of Family Physicians of Canada



    MISSISSAUGA, ON, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - The College of Family Physicians of
Canada (CFPC) is pleased to announce Canada's Family Physicians of the Year
for 2007. The Reg L. Perkin Awards will be presented at the CFPC's annual
Family Medicine Forum in Winnipeg on October 10, 2007.

    Including one award recipient from each province, the 2007 Family
Physicians of the Year are:

    
    -  Dr. Nirvair Levitt, British Columbia
    -  Dr. Timothy Kolotyluk, Alberta
    -  Dr. Steven Goluboff, Saskatchewan
    -  Dr. Allan Ranson, Manitoba
    -  Dr. Graham Swanson, Ontario
    -  Dre Marie-Thérèse Lussier, Quebec
    -  Dr. Chris O'Brien, New Brunswick
    -  Dr. Lisa Bonang, Nova Scotia
    -  Dr. Barbara Flanagan, Prince Edward Island
    -  Dr. Patrick O'Shea, Newfoundland
    

    Canada's Family Physicians of the Year are nominated by their peers,
patients, other health care colleagues, and community leaders for providing
exceptional care to their patients, making meaningful contributions to the
health and well-being of their communities, and dedicating themselves as
researchers and educators of future generations of family doctors.
    "The College is proud to recognize these outstanding family physicians
for their professional dedication, achievements and the positive difference
they make every day in the lives of many people," said Dr. Tom Bailey,
President of the CFPC. "Family physicians are the backbone of our healthcare
system, and this year's award recipients exemplify the commitment to
excellence of family physicians in Canada today."
    The 2007 Family Physicians of the Year are a diverse group from urban and
rural communities. Their collective achievements reflect their leadership as
doctors, teachers, researchers, and educators combined with commitments to
areas of special interest that include international aid work, palliative
care, HIV/AIDS, obstetrics, diabetes and communications.

    FAMILY PHYSICIANS: DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS

    "Family medicine extends far beyond the doctor's office," said Dr. Calvin
Gutkin, Executive Director and CEO of the CFPC. "As we see in the
accomplishments of this year's Family Physicians of the Year, family doctors
are dedicated to improving the health of their patients, the learning
experience of medical students, the quality of research, and the well-being of
their communities. We thank them for their exceptional commitment that
improves the quality of many lives."
    The awards are named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, CFPC Executive
Director from 1985 to 1996. This is the 35th year the College has honoured
family physicians with the Family Physicians of the Year award. The program is
supported in part through funding from Merck Frosst Canada Ltd., Health Canada
and the CFPC's Research and Education Foundation.

medicine in Canada. Representing 19,450 members across the country, it is the
professional organization responsible for establishing standards for the
