Canada's conscience: TVO pays tribute to June Callwood, Friday April 20, 2007 at 10 pm

TORONTO, April 17 /CNW/ - She was an accomplished journalist, broadcaster
and author, but it was her prolific and tireless work as a social activist
that earned her a reputation as Canada's conscience. Her passion and concern
for social causes, particularly youth and women's issues, led to her
involvement in over 50 Canadian social organizations. Among them was Casey
House, a Toronto AIDS hospice she founded.
As a tribute to June Callwood, TVO presents an encore broadcast of a
one-hour special on Callwood's fascinating life - introduced by friend and
actress Shirley Douglas - Friday April 20, 2007 at 10 pm.
In a conversation first taped in October 2004, Callwood spoke to Paula
Todd about the joys and sorrows of her impoverished childhood, and the
crushing loss of her own child. She also discussed her renowned career as an
award-winning journalist and social activist, and her cancer diagnosis. In
spite of that diagnosis and her refusal of any treatment, it was clear then,
as always, that she lived every moment to the fullest.
