CALGARY, Oct. 24 /CNW/ - Thursday evening was a magical one in Calgary
with the premiere of Alberta Ballet's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Audience
members were swept away by choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's ethereal world
where mischievous fairies amuse themselves by playing matchmaker, using magic
to mix up the love lives of two human couples.
The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium was full of laughter at the
misadventures of the couples, including Demetrius and Helena, who were
portrayed with keen comedic skill by Alberta Ballet's Blair Puente and Nicole
Caron. Yukichi Hattori proved his talent in the role of Puck, one he has
played in different styles since the age of 11. The audience was also charmed
by the cast of 22 children, trained at five Calgary dance schools, including
the School of Alberta Ballet.
Alberta Ballet premiered A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2001 and it is
returning this season in response to overwhelming praise from audiences and
critics alike. Recently described as "the world's most explosively talented
choreographer" (The Guardian), Wheeldon is a wunderkind, widely regarded as
the heir to great ballet creators George Balanchine, Kenneth MacMillan and
"With innate wit and musicality, Wheeldon tells (A Midsummer Night's
