QUEBEC CITY, July 9 /CNW Telbec/ - This year, Calgary Stampede cowboys
and visitors alike will be sporting the 400th anniversary colours one entire
day in honour of Québec City's anniversary.
On the morning of July 11, the official 400th anniversary day, 5,000
colourful Québec 2008 scarves along with 40,000 hatbands and 30,000 Carnival
effigies will be handed out. At the same time, during Snow Treat, the
traditional Québec Winter Carnival activity, 4,000 portions of ice cream will
be distributed. In the afternoon, 25,000 400th anniversary flags will be
handed out at the rodeo and during the Grandstand Show that evening. What's
more, Samuel de Champlain in person will be on hand to greet visitors.
"As early as last year, the Société du 400e expressed the wish to
celebrate in 2008 with all Canadians and to extend the festivities from coast
to coast, and we counted on our twin city, Calgary, and the dynamic ties
between institutions in both cities to make this happen," explained Daniel
Gélinas, CEO of the Société du 400e anniversaire de Québec.
Since the Stampede opened on July 4, participants have already had a good
taste of the 400th anniversary celebrations. The super Grandstand Show, put on
every evening to a sold-out crowd of over 17,000 spectators, showcases the
400th with highlights of the founding of the city. Performers from Québec such
as La Bottine Souriante, Mathieu Provencal, and Cirque du Soleil and Cirque
Nouvel-Air acrobats are also in the show. Video clips of the 400th are
projected on giant screens around the site, and Québec has a booth at the
Stampede gate with information and promotional objects for the festivities.
There's even a contest to win a family trip to the 2009 Québec Winter Carnival
on WestJet airlines.
There's also an economic facet to this mission headed by Québec City
Mayor, Régis Labeaume with Québec City-based companies, such as Roche and
Entreprise Ovale, on board to beef up the strong ties forged in recent years.
"Québec City's 400th anniversary is an excellent opportunity to hold
business meetings and build new alliances that we hope will last beyond the
festivities. This will be our own legacy!" Mr. Gélinas said in closing.
