CAJ presents "Reporter" documentary film at Hot Docs 2009

TORONTO, May 5 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Journalists is this
week shining a spotlight on the importance, role and challenges of foreign
news coverage, co-presenting screenings of "Reporter" with the Hot Docs
international documentary film festival in Toronto.
"Reporter" follows New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof through the
Democratic Republic of the Congo on his hunt for a story that will make
readers care. The film documents the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner's struggle
to focus international attention on the war-ravaged country where 5.4 million
people have died -- the single greatest loss of life since the Second World
War.
"Foreign coverage plays a crucial role in keeping the public informed of
events that may seem a world away but are ultimately connected to them," said
CAJ chairman Saleem Khan. "Today, as mainstream news organizations are cutting
back, firing staff and even find their existence at risk, 'Reporter' reminds
us of the need for important, original work by professional journalists --
work that most blogs and other media lack the resources, training and
experience to do."
