Cache Creek Landfill receives positive review from independent engineering firm commissioned by BC Ministry of Environment

    - Provincial approval process for landfill Annex expansion proceeding -

VANCOUVER, June 24 /CNW/ - Wastech Services Ltd., the co-owner and
operator of the Cache Creek Landfill, today confirmed that the landfill has
received a positive review from an independent environmental engineering firm
commissioned by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment. AMEC, the author
of the report and a leading independent global environmental consultancy,
concluded that the Cache Creek Landfill is operating well and that there are
no concerns with regard to drinking water wells or leachate contamination of
the Bonaparte River.
In its report, AMEC also identified a limited number of minor issues, and
made recommendations for further investigations surrounding higher than
average levels of chloride in landfill area groundwater and methane gas
originating from the landfill, all of which Wastech is aware of and is
actively addressing. The AMEC report has been presented to the residents of
Cache Creek and Ashcroft at townhall meetings yesterday. The Ministry of
Environment has confirmed that a full copy of the AMEC report will be
available online at www.amec.com. A copy will also be available online through
Wastech's parent company at www.belkorp.com.
The Ministry of Environment commissioned AMEC to conduct an independent
analysis of the Cache Creek Landfill following a study of the landfill by
International Ecogen Inc. This study contained a number of conclusions that
appeared to contradict 20 years of independent ground water monitoring data at
the landfill and raised concerns about the quality of the local drinking
water. In its report, AMEC was particularly critical of EcoGen's methodology
and stated that most of EcoGen's conclusions were not supportable.
"The AMEC results confirm two decades of independent monitoring and
analysis of the ground water quality below the landfill," said Russ Black,
General Manager, Wastech. "We take our role as a safe and responsible operator
of the landfill very seriously and provided the Ministry and AMEC with full
access to our data and the property to ensure they could perform a thorough
analysis."

    Cache Creek Annex Expansion Update
Wastech is currently seeking permission from the provincial government to
amend the Cache Creek Landfill's operating certificate to allow for a new
seven-hectare annex on land immediately adjacent to the existing landfill. The
public consultation period for the approval of the Annex ends July 2, 2009,
and with the release of AMEC's final report, Wastech is confident that the
Ministry of Environment will approve the Annex.
If the Ministry of Environment grants permission to proceed with the
Annex this will extend the permitted capacity of the Cache Creek Landfill by
up to two years. Metro Vancouver is currently evaluating disposal options as
part of their solid waste management planning process and has been working
under the assumption that the Cache Creek Landfill will close in 2010. The
Cache Creek Landfill Annex will provide Metro Vancouver with critical
additional time to thoroughly evaluate the various disposal options before
them.
