TORONTO, March 20 /CNW/ - Mayor David Miller and Councillor Kyle Rae,
Chair of the Economic Development Committee, announced today that they are
leading an April business mission to the cities of Chongqing, Beijing and
Shanghai together with 15 business leaders.
"This mission implements significant goals and objectives of our Agenda
for Prosperity by increasing economic activity in emerging markets with cities
beyond North America," said Mayor Miller. "The business leaders who helped
develop the Agenda were clear that we should be taking these initiatives so
that we may highlight Toronto as a hub for environmental innovation and a
centre for global education and training."

Toronto and Chongqing celebrated their 20th anniversary as sister cities
in 2006 at which time Chongqing's Mayor Wang led a delegation to Toronto. The
current mission will be the first time in 15 years that the Mayor of Toronto
has reciprocated with a return visit to Chongqing. Discussions aim to
strengthen the existing sister-city relationship.
The city-to-city mission will build contacts and relationships to enhance
opportunities for Toronto-based companies to serve the Chinese market; attract
investment from Chinese enterprises to Toronto; and position Toronto as the
investment gateway to North America.
"Toronto needs to present itself on the global stage. We need to get into
the marketplace to tell our stories, highlight our potential and promote our
business opportunities," said Councillor Rae.
While in Beijing, Mayor Miller will meet with senior municipal officials,
address York University alumni and participate in business and investor
The delegation will discuss potential areas of co-operation in particular
environmental stewardship in Chongqing. Mayor Miller will address a University
of Toronto alumni group in Shanghai.
