TORONTO, June 22 /CNW/ - Terry Grimes, a teacher at Vanier Public School
in Brockville, will receive the Fire Marshal's Award for Excellence in Fire
Safety at a ceremony on June 28, 2007 in Toronto. The annual Fire Marshal's
Public Fire Safety Council's Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding
contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
Terry is being recognized for her dedication toward providing essential
injury prevention and life skills to young children. More than 10 years ago,
Terry became involved in teaching the Learn Not to Burn program to instill
fire safe behaviours in students. In 1997, Brockville was chosen as the first
Canadian testing site for a new injury prevention program called Risk Watch
designed to educate children about safer behaviours. Terry was an active
participant in the Risk Watch pilot. It was the first of its kind in Canada
and feedback from this pilot helped to shape the program.
Terry continues to be very much involved in the promotion of Risk Watch
throughout the province and participates in presentations at conferences,
workshops and training symposiums. She has served as a mentor to educate
others on best practices to implement the program and continues to actively
use and promote Risk Watch in her classrooms.
"Terry has been a strong driver of the Risk Watch program in Brockville
and throughout Ontario," said Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "Her hard work and
commitment to the program will help to reinforce important injury prevention
behaviours in children, ultimately helping to make Ontario a safer place."
Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 22 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Monte Kwinter and Fire
Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the Fairmont
Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
