'Brave New(s) World' summit explores future of journalism

TORONTO, May 20 /CNW/ - Responding to unprecedented challenges in the
global news industry and media sectors, Centennial College is hosting a
first-ever think tank summit called Brave New(s) World: The Future of
Journalism Summit on May 28.
The summit, held at The Centre for Creative Communications, Centennial's
campus dedicated to digital communications, media and design programs, will
bring together leaders from the journalism world to examine the current
situation and offer some insight into the future. By working in collaborative
teams, participants will contribute towards a final report to be published
online and via social media platforms.
What Would Google Do? author Jeff Jarvis, associate professor and
director of the interactive journalism program at the City University of New
York's new Graduate School of Journalism, will be the keynote speaker,
delivering his talk via Skype, a popular video conferencing application.
"With a collision of sweeping interactive technologies, economic factors
and societal trends happening all at once, we're experiencing massive and
rapid change in the journalism sector that has never been seen before," says
Nate Horowitz, dean of the School of Communications, Media and Design,
Centennial College. "The objective of this summit is to gather the leaders
from the news and media sectors, together with some of the best and brightest
students, to share information, debate the issues and ultimately find common
ground and set the appropriate course for tomorrow."
Moderated by Citytv's Kris Reyes, summit participants will form into
breakout groups to tackle issues of the economics of news, new technology,
ethics in real-time and the overall future of the profession. In addition,
discussion will range from the global recession, to the closure of several
print news goliaths, to rapid changes in technology, to a fragmenting audience
and declining advertising revenue.
Participants are selected by a jury of students and the event is closed
to the general public. If you would like to participate, please contact Paul
Koidis at pkoidis@centennialcollege.ca
