-- SC Johnson sponsors event set to welcome Hollywood celebrity and teams
from around the globe --
BRANTFORD, ON, May 7 /CNW/ - What began as a local tournament to support
Brantford's Sports Facilities Infrastructure Legacy Fund has taken on a life
of its own, as Brantford's 3rd annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament
gets set to welcome a bit of Hollywood stardom and international competition
to the Tournament Capital of Ontario from June 5-7.
Kevin Smith, a film producer, director, screenwriter, actor and comic
book writer from Los Angeles who is well known for his role as "Silent Bob"
has entered a team of celebrities in the tournament, including the counterpart
to his Silent Bob role, Jay (Jason Mewes). Smith has also heavily promoted the
event on his website and through a number of local media outlets, resulting in
an influx of interest from as far away as New Zealand.
In an interview with Brantford.com, Smith said he is a big fan of Wayne
and Walter Gretzky, so when he stumbled upon an online flyer for the
tournament, he was determined to be a part of it. "What a great way to meet
Walter, but also give back to the community that produced Wayne," Smith said.
SC Johnson is the title sponsor of the tournament, and has partnered with
Ball Hockey International (BHI), and the Tournament Capital of Ontario (TCO)
to make this year's event bigger and better than ever. In addition to monetary
support, SC Johnson employees will be volunteering their time to help out with
"Our company has been part of Brantford now for 90 years, and giving back
to this vibrant community is extremely important to us," said Julian Wiles,
Vice President of Product, SC Johnson. "This is the first year we've been a
title sponsor for the tournament, and we're thrilled to support such a great
cause through this exciting event."
Walter Gretzky, who has long been known in the community for his
commitment to amateur sports, has been involved in the tournament since its
inception three years ago. He will be on hand tournament weekend to welcome
everyone to the city.
"With so much international attention this year, this event just keeps on
growing. In fact, we're hoping to register 100 teams this year," said Gretzky.
"It's really a lot of fun and is a great event for Brantford - I think it has
the potential to become the signature event for the city."
It's not too late to sign up to play! Both youth and adult teams are
encouraged to register. Registration fees are $275.00 + GST per team and the
deadline to register for all divisions is May 29, 2009. The minimum number of
